As part of the Delta region, the site has nutrient-rich soils from past meanders and oxbows lakes, where wetlands used to be abundant. Today, we see these natural features parceled and restricted for human activity.

The area is home to numerous agricultural lands growing soy, wheat, cotton, and small single-family communities. Together they live with many types of wetlands, such as the rare bottomland hardwood forests and important bird areas.

Due to the flat geography, levees heavily intervene to protect valuable farmland and communities from floods. During the major floods in 2019, this area has faced over 120 days of flooding as the levees that were supposed to protect against these floods trapped water within the backwater area.
