To address the problem, the US Army Corp of Engineers proposed a 300 million dollar pump project that will drain the water inside the levee down south. This ignited a heated debate with those in support of the project versus conservation groups concerned about the negative impacts it has on the natural habitat in the area. The project was approved by the EPA, and construction is set to take place.

The $300 Million pump protects the cropland of only 30 farmers, who are funded by large investment corporations. It artificially drains 67,000 acres of wetlands and increases the flood risk of around 31,000 residents in the area. This is a typical example of spending a large number of funds to benefit a few.
