Regional Impacts
Located in the Delta region on the Mississippi River, the Yazoo Backwater area is a critical regional sponge landscape for receiving water outflow from upstream. Our project brings back the wetlands to the backwater area to increase the land’s water holding capacity, nulling the dependency of the pump.
Regional Impact of Sponge Landscape
By reducing the risk of flooding, the Yazoo Sponge will lessen the pressure on the Lower Mississippi River, allowing communities in the area to tackle other pressing issues such as sea-level rising and land subsidence. By applying the strategies outlined in the White Paper by David Muth, we reimagined a sustainable Mississippi river ecosystem where people live in synergy with the land.
